The Purpose Of Cash For Clunkers?

I have been wondering about something, ever since hubby and I went to get our flu shots, yesterday.

We passed by a large lot of cars and trucks, where there never was a dealership of any kind, and they were having a BIG sale. Lots and lots of people. Well, it turns out that there was an article about it in the morning paper, which I did not read. Hubby enlightened me. And here is where my confusion begins.

I assumed that the Cash For Clunkers program, initiated by the president, would destroy those vehicles and the metals would be melted down to be used for other things, possibly new and greener vehicles.

This sale was of all the clunkers the dealerships around town received and.....they were RESELLING THEM! They are putting them back on the streets, gas guzzlers, poor exhaust systems, tires and all! Oh, they had them washed up and sparkling in the dull sunlight and most did not look like clunkers.......

Is this what is going on across America? If it is, then what was the purpose of Cash For Clunkers? I thought it was not only to rid the streets and the environment of gas guzzling vehicles but to stimulate the American Car Industry. No stipulation was made, evidently, to purchase an American Made vehicle as the largest number of sales went to the Japanese made vehicles.

Well, with this said and off my chest, but not my mind....I need to get busy on some orders that need to be completed and ready to mail....
Have a Happy Sunday!
Jil

I agree with ya sweety, the Cash for clunkers going on across America is truly not the best program. While America struggles to turn in their old cars so that they can update them, the dealerships are trying to make an extra buck calling them good cars to others who can't afford something better, and then that innocent person is stuck with a clunker. I think it is wrong to cheat innocent people. Wonderful thought for today, great post.

Oh come on now Jil, don't ya just love to have your tax payer dollars go to your neighbor so they can buy a new car they can't afford!!!??? Don't you know that is the new American way of doing things.
You probably are seeing the car sales because the gov't never paid the dealers the money they were promised, remember, the gov't is broke and has no money..........Char

That is correct, they were to be totally destroyed.

These fellas are no doubt trying to recoup the monies they lost by believing they were supposed to be reimbursed by our government ... the honest ones that speak words of truth & honesty ... we are suppose to believe every word they say. Yeah! right! Wait until these new car purchases all get repossessed & how that will affect us all ......

And, now we are going to be paying for all those new home appliances (washer/dryers/etc) next ... go figure.

Have a lovely week. TTFN~Marydon

Yes, it's going on all over the good ole USA! I truly think it's just another quick fix which obviously didn't work. Could it possibly be that's why we question what's going on with our "quick fix" health care? Just another example of "haste, makes waste"! Thanks for this post, I needed to get it off my chest too!

I was so interested in this post - the Cash for Clunkers program was over here in Germany too, and it too had some odd side effects. The car manufacturers only made out well as long as the people were able to buy new cars, now they are suffering again, many bought cars that they actually could not afford and are in turn re-selling them. And as for the old clunkers, well, many were destroyed over here, but it put many used car dealers out of business, since there are no longer decent used cars to be sold! Some how, I think the whole idea was stupid and should not haver been put into effect. It caused more troubles then it cured, here in Germany and obviously over in the states too. Good post!

I haven't seen a government run program yet that really works. It didn't help the manufacturers that they were trying instead it sold more foregin made cars in our area. They are selling the parts off the clunkers. The insurance fix that they are in such a hurry to fix absolutely scares me to no end. We, the taxpayer, can't continue to pay for their stupidity on capital hill. They need to get back to the real world and live like the rest of us. They should have to use the same insurance and all as the rest of us.Then maybe they wouldn't be in such a rush all the time. Thanks for your post.
