~Advice Needed~Please....

Hello Ladies.....I found this lovely piece of embroidery on one of my jaunts to a favorite antique store. When I found a corner peeking out from other not very nice pieces, I wondered why this was in with them and then I saw the stains....I sadly laid it back, but arranged it on top so others could see this lovely work that someone very talented with a needle created.

I browsed on thru the three stories of linens, glass, furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry, china and more than I can remember. As I was strolling and picking up items to purchase, I kept thinking of that piece of embroidery....it just kept calling to me. So......I trudged back up two flights of stairs and as I walked towards it, I thought it was just too lovely to leave behind. I thought that there must be a way to get these old stains out. The nice woman, cashier and owner, did not know how, but wished me luck and marked it down to $1.00.

I have something I picked up in a quilt shop called Grandma's Secret Spot Remover....well, Grandma's Secret did not even begin to budge these stains....I know the little ones by the basket are tiny rust stains, but the larger ones have a raspberry cast to them.

I really want to use this as the colors are my favorites and I love this piece and have the perfect spot for it on my Low Boy. (This piece of furniture once belonged to my Great Grandmother and my Great Aunt left it to me, including what was in all the dreawers. In the bottom drawer wrapped in tissue was a beaded flapper dress, purse and hat. How I wish I had them today!!!)

I did not mean to get side tracked here....what I am hoping is that one of you talented gals will have the secret that Grandma did not have on how to remove the stain.

I had thought of cutting around the basket and turning it into a pillow, but I love the corner work and the hand crocheted lace and do not want to do this if at all possible....

So all suggestions are very, very Welcome and a big THANK YOU in advance...
Jil

I am not sure that the stains will come out especially the rust. I would suggest adding a little extra embroidery to cover the stained areas. Maybe some scatted buds or leaf sprays. The embrodery looks like it was done with pearl cotton, still available today in most needlework stores. It is a lovely peice. Good luck and best wishes, Carol

JIl, I agree with Cherished Tresures. Remember when we painted every now and then we would get a paint spot we did not want and have to add a little something to disguise it. Same thing - only this is embroidery. You may try lemonjuice and salt and put in the morning sun. I removed some rust that way one time.Have a good day....Pauliane

I wish I had a suggestion...I don't. But I did want to say that I think your find is very lovely. I hope you are able to get the stains out...or add a bit of embroidery so that you can cover them up.

Have a lovely day,
Patti

Oh Jil, I think you may be stuck with the stains. But, if I know you my friend, you will find a way to work some of your gorgeous ribbon work into the project and hide it all. A very pretty piece and I too would have bought it. Happy Pink Saturday, Char

Hi Jil,
I cleaned a bunch of that antique lace , some had rust stains, and my miracle worker is BABY OXYCLEAN. I filled a large bowl with waterand a healthy scoop of oxyclean, and let it SOAK,SOak and Soak, stirring up the water occassionally. You may want to give it a try, it will at least take the musty smells out. My laces looked bright and new after soaking. Hope that helps

Hi Jil, I deal with that kind of stain all the time. If I can get it out with the same methods that everyone else has told you about here, I usually use buttons, or tiny appliques of venise lace. Works great!

I stumbled in to this post as I was blog-hopping Where Bloggers Create. I have gotten some pretty hopeless looking stains out of vintage linens with a product called Stain Bully. If you have Bi-Mart in your area that is where I get it. I use it as a last resort but so far I haven't destroyed anything and I have only had one stain it wouldn't remove and it did lighten that one. Good luck!

I use oxyclean on all my whites and stains! I wet the stain, make a paste of oxyclean and rub it in and let it sit for a day or two....I swear it works like magic!
Or soak items in a bucket with water and a scoop of oxy!
I had two doilies that were meldew and rusty stained and they are soaking in oxy as we speak....I am waiting to show hubby how awesome the oxy works!

Let us know the out come!

P.S. come and visit...we are neighbors!
